The locality of Betancuria is the least populated on the island, and it's domains it has the Rural Park of Betancuria, one of the nature reference points of the island. The population of this municipality which was the capital until 1860, is of 1000.The name Betancuria comes from Juan de Bethencourt. It is next to Puerto del Rosario from the north Antigua to it's east, and Tuineje to its southeast. On the south is the penninsula of Jandía and Pájara.
The patron saint of Fuerteventura is Nuestra Señora de la Peña, who's image we find in the Ermita Vega de Rio Palmas.
The Museum of Arte Sacro and the Museo Etnografico of Fuerteventura are found in this municipality.
Betancuria has it's etymological origin in Juan de Bethencourt and Gadifer de la Salle. Both in the XV century lifted it's first settlement of the island in the Valley known as the Valle de Betancuria.
Betancuria was the first capital of the island, it held this title until the year 1834, the year that part of this island lost importance and transcended in favor of other points in Fuerteventura. |
