Fuerteventura, besides it being an arrid Island and a bit deserty, hides protected treasures. The volcanic malpaises, natural monuments and rural parks with a great fauna variety make a great showcase of protected paradices.
By municipalities the one that is the richest and most protected is Pájara, on the south of the island. In this municipality we like to highlight the Parque Natural de Jandía (natural park) which holds practically the entire penninsula of Jandia, and where you will find many endangered species, flora and fauna. From Pajara we must also mention the Monumento Natural Aljui with sedimented remains of extinct species. Montaña Cardon que holds the greatest number of varied flora, Parque Rural de Betancuria and the Paraje Natural Playa del Matorral, place where the migratory birds make a stop, making it a location of great scientific interest.
In the locality of Tuineje, you'll find a protected landscape called Malpais Grande, a protected spot where you can appreciate volcanic explosions with lava remains. Cuchillos de Vigán, a place where you can find all kinds of protected species like the Fishing bird. Caldera de Gairia, that is still warm from it's last eruption and the Parque Rural de Betancuria, ideal for predatory bird watching.
Lastly we mustn't forget to mention the Isla de Lobos, another one of these protected locations of Fuerteventura. It used to be a place where there were many sealions which fisherman killed off to avoid them from eating their fish.
