The locality of Puerto del Rosario is the capital of the island of Fuerteventura. It is situated in the north of the island and is next to La Oliva on the north , and Antigua and Betancuria on the south. It´s estimated population exceeds 35,000. Puerto del Rosario is the terminal municipality that is the most heavily populated in the Island of Fuerteventura, with a population of more than 30,000 scattered around Puerto del Rosario, Casillas del Angel and La Asomada.
In it´s domains the island counts on the airport of Matorral and Puerto de Cabras. A few centuries before it started growing into a locality. It is the port from which ferries and cruise lines come and go from other points on the island.
It grew into the capital of the island in 1860, until then the capital had been the municipality of Betancuria.
One of the most interesting buildings that we must mention is the house in which Miguel de Unamuno lived during his exile in the dictatorship of Primo de Ribera or the Auditorio Insular.
Puerto del Rosario is a priveledged place for kitesurf, windsurf or surf lovers. It´s a perfect spot to practice these sports.
Puerto del Rosario is also where we´ll find the auditoriums of the island, museums and expos, the museum of Miguel de Unamuno and diverse churches and mosques cataloged as historic interest. |
